NYCC ran from October 8 to 11, bringing film and television news to fans. Marvel Television opened the convention’s major announcements with a panel led by Brad Winderbaum.
Marvel screened the pilot episode of VisionQuest ahead of its October 14 Disney+ premiere. The series continues the story established in WandaVision and follows the android Vision.

Marvel also announced three new Marvel Zombies installments, planned for Halloween releases between 2027 and 2029. Its upcoming spy thriller, Zodiac, received a teaser and a 2028 Disney+ premiere window.
At the same time, Paramount+ renewed Avatar: Seven Havens for its third and fourth seasons. The announcement came on the same day its first three episodes premiered.

The franchise also revealed Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, a new animated series. It follows a rebellious teenage Avatar learning the elements while facing pirates and chaotic spirits. The series will stream on Paramount+, although no release date has been announced.
Another major announcement came from author Eoin Colfer on October 11. Disney approved an animated Artemis Fowl series for Disney Channel and Disney+. Colfer will serve as an executive producer. The announcement offers another adaptation of his bestselling books following the poorly received 2020 live-action film.
Blumhouse also took the stage with its two-hour BlumFest presentation on Friday. Jason Blum and collaborators, including Mike Flanagan and Lakeith Stanfield, revealed several upcoming projects. The Exorcist: Martyrs, directed by Flanagan, received its first trailer ahead of its March 12, 2027 release.
The presentation also confirmed September 24, 2027, for the Blair Witch reboot. Paranormal Activity is scheduled for May 21, 2027. Curry Barker also introduced Anything But Ghosts, a horror-comedy about fraudulent ghost hunters.
The Social Reckoning Stumbles After Mixed Reviews
Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning sparked early conversations last week. The film arrived 16 years after The Social Network, which won acclaim for its portrayal of Facebook’s creation.
Early reactions appeared on October 5, praising the performances and Sorkin’s writing. Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White drew particular attention for their roles. However, several critics felt the film lacked the original’s sharpness and impact.
Reviews began appearing before its October 9 theatrical release. Rotten Tomatoes listed the film at approximately 54% from critics on October 7. Its score reflected a mixed response to Sorkin’s examination of Facebook’s influence and controversies.

The film then struggled to attract audiences during its opening weekend. It earned approximately $5.5 million domestically, falling short of projections between $7 million and $8 million. The result also lagged far behind The Social Network, which opened to $22.4 million in 2010.
The new film follows whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Madison, and journalist Jeff Horwitz, played by White. Their investigation exposes troubling information about Facebook’s operations. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg, replacing Jesse Eisenberg, while Sorkin takes over directing duties from David Fincher.
Xbox Launches XP to Expand Its Franchises Beyond Games
Microsoft’s Xbox announced XP on October 8, a new division covering film, television, merchandise, partnerships, and live events. Kayleen Walters, previously associated with Xbox and an executive producer for A Minecraft Movie will lead the division as president.
XP will bring several existing teams together under one operation. Its goal is to expand Xbox franchises beyond gaming and reach audiences through other forms of entertainment. Planned adaptations and projects include Call of Duty, Fallout, Diablo, and a Minecraft sequel.
The move follows the success of A Minecraft Movie, released by Warner Bros. in 2025. The film became the year’s fifth-highest-grossing movie worldwide. Its sequel, A Minecraft Movie Squared is scheduled for July 23, 2027.
Megalopolis Returns to Theaters for Exclusive and Special Screenings
Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis will return to American theaters on October 24. Reading International is arranging the screenings across participating venues nationwide. The event will include a live-streamed question-and-answer session with Coppola, moderated by his son, Roman Coppola.
Audiences will be able to submit questions by text. Attendees will also receive printed copies of Coppola’s director’s statement. The screenings offer another opportunity to see the film theatrically after its disappointing initial run.

Released in 2024, Megalopolis was a personal project that Coppola financed himself. Its reported production budget ranged from $120 million to $136 million, making it one of the most expensive independent films ever made.
Despite its scale, the science-fiction epic grossed only about $14.4 million worldwide which resulted in a substantial financial loss calculated by Deadline Hollywood of $75.5 million. The film stars Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Aubrey Plaza.
The new screenings will give Coppola another chance to present the film to audiences. They will also let viewers hear directly from the filmmaker about his ambitious production.
