Last week, Amazon’s public error set up an obstacle for Jason Statham’s Mutiny before its opening day in theatres. On the other hand, the company finalized the recast of its eponymous character for its upcoming God of War series.
Amazon’s Mutiny Leak Leaves Stakeholder Upset
Action-thriller fans had been gearing up for another punishing, relentless Jason Statham-led film in theatres on August 21. Then on August 19, two days before its wide release, the entire film surfaced on Amazon Prime Video in the United States.
The full movie appeared on Mutiny’s product detail page, where trailers were hosted, and remained there for hours overnight. Subscribers watched it in full while others downloaded it, with pirated copies spreading on X and torrent sites shortly after.
The wider public discovered the leak when accounts on X started posting their surprise at finding it.
One user posted, “I’m watching Jason Statham’s new movie Mutiny, streaming on Amazon for free right now. This has to be a huge mistake, right? My theater has showtimes starting this week!”
After taking down the video, reports revealed that the release was caused by a technical backend error.
Amazon acts as the film’s Premium Video-On-Demand partner for digital distribution. Lionsgate handles North American theatrical distribution, with Sky Cinema overseeing the UK. Likewise, separate buyers hold rights across other international territories.
Neither Amazon nor the producers of the film have made any comment regarding the incident. However, international buyers were not quiet about what they expected that the leak would cost them.
Deadline reported that several buyers expressed their displeasure, with one stating that, “It’s a major f*ck-up. I’ve never been in this situation before. What’s clear is that this is a multimillion-dollar problem for Amazon, and buyers will expect a check to be written to help resolve this.”
A crew member from the production also lashed out: “What the hell? There are serious repercussions for distributors here.”
The film opened in France and the Middle East the day before the leak, reportedly performing well in both markets. While Lionsgate had acquired North American distribution rights for an eight-figure sum and was set to premiere it theatrically, other international buyers with later release dates had the most to lose, as pirated copies spread widely.
When the film opened to theatres on August 21, it debuted in sixth place domestically with $7.5 million, a modest but functional result that cleared Statham’s other 2026 release, Shelter, which debuted with $5.5 million. Although International box office data is still being compiled, its domestic box office performance is nothing short of a decent start.
Bautista Steps In as Kratos as Hurst’s Injury Forces God of War Recast
Dave Bautista has been selected by Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios to join their live-action God of War series. Bautista was officially cast as Kratos, the warrior at the centre of the series, on Thursday.
The role had been in the hands of Ryan Hurst until late June, when Hurst suffered a complete bicep tear during stunt rehearsals on set and required immediate surgery.
With months of rehabilitation needed to recover, the injury pushed filming resumption to early 2027. This placed the entire production and release schedule out of reach. Since Amazon had ordered two seasons of the series to be shot back-to-back, producers moved to recast rather than hold the production. Bautista is expected to begin preparation immediately, with filming resuming in Vancouver in mid-October.
Before the injury, filming had been ongoing for four months since February 27. Bautista will reshoot all scenes involving Kratos alongside a cast that includes Callum Vinson as Kratos’ son Atreus.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Mandy Patinkin, Ed Skrein, Max Parker, Teresa Palmer, Alastair Duncan, Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn all play figures from Norse mythology.
The series adapts the 2018 PlayStation game God of War. It follows Kratos and Atreus as they journey across the Norse realms to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife, with the threat of Norse gods closing in on them.
The Odyssey Hits Three Milestones in Three Days
The Odyssey now stands at $1.45 billion worldwide, with 62.7% of that total coming from international markets at $907 million.
The milestones began when BFI IMAX London, the largest cinema screen in the United Kingdom, reportedly announced the film as its highest-grossing release of all time.
Nolan’s The Odyssey displaced James Cameron’s Avatar with £2,683,987 in ticket sales and 95% seat occupancy across all screenings at the 500-seater venue.
The following day, Ryan Reynolds posted a video on X cutting together scenes from Deadpool and the Wolverine alongside footage from The Odyssey. The video captioned the film’s new position as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
The Odyssey claimed that title after its global total crossed $1.35 billion, surpassing Deadpool and the Wolverine’s $1.33 billion.
Universal also announced a home release window for The Odyssey. Beginning November 17, roughly four months after its July 17 theatrical debut, the film will be available to rent and purchase digitally.
LAIKA’s Wildwood Trailer Brings Something Rare to the Week
LAIKA delivered one of the more quietly spectacular moments of the week with its first full trailer for Wildwood. The film follows a young girl named Prue who crosses into a forbidden forest on the edge of Portland to rescue her baby brother. As a result, she is drawn into a hidden world of talking animals, warring factions, and ancient magic.
Ahead of the trailer, the studio released a featurette showing the puppet fabricators and set builders behind both Wildwood and the studio’s landmark Coraline, giving a direct look at the scale of labour the film represents.
Wildwood has been in production since 2021. It features 136 handcrafted sets, with some being large enough for crew members to walk through. Along with this is an inclusion of 231 practical puppets. The trailer has sparked anticipation for the film, with roughly 74 million views since its release.
Wildwood is set for a theatrical release on October 23. At two hours and twenty minutes, it is not only LAIKA’s longest film but the longest stop-motion animated feature ever made.
