Alamo Drafthouse Launches Alamo Exclusives to Bring Undistributed Festival Films to US Theaters

Alamo Drafthouse has announced a new initiative known as Alamo Exclusives, designed to give festival films without distribution a chance to screen in cinemas across the United States.

A New Path for Festival Films

The announcement follows a strong year for independent cinema. Films such as Iron Lung, Backrooms, and Obsession have not only secured theatrical releases but also generated box-office success and industry discussion despite their independent origins.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival was also largely dominated by independent and European productions, with comparatively few major studio titles in competition.

However, the success stories represent only a small fraction of the thousands of independent films produced each year. Sundance alone reportedly receives around 10,000 submissions annually, and while many festival selections earn critical acclaim and standing ovations, a large number never secure theatrical distribution after their festival runs.

Alamo Exclusives Aims to Fill Distribution Gap

The Sony-owned dine-in theater chain unveiled Alamo Exclusives on Wednesday, describing it as a first-of-its-kind theatrical distribution initiative focused on independently produced films. It targets productions that receive critical acclaim at major festivals but leave without distribution deals.

The program will feature films from Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, TIFF, Cannes, the Berlin International Film Festival and Alamo Drafthouse’s own Fantastic Fest.

Rather than acquiring distribution rights outright, Alamo Drafthouse will work directly with filmmakers to bring their films to audiences across its 40 US locations while providing marketing support and theatrical exposure.

“Too many incredible films premiere at festivals and then never receive the theatrical life they deserve,” said Lisa Dreyer, Alamo Drafthouse’s Director of Fantastic Fest and Film Innovation.

According to the company, the concept for Alamo Exclusives was developed roughly three years ago as the industry continued dealing with the long-term effects of the pandemic on independent theatrical exhibition. During that period, traditional distributors increasingly shifted toward lower-risk releases, leaving many acclaimed festival films without theatrical opportunities.

“We are actively searching for films across all genres, from horror to comedy, to everything in-between, to champion in this new, exciting way,” Dreyer added.

Building on Alamo Drafthouse’s Independent Film Identity

Alamo Drafthouse has long distinguished itself by focusing on the moviegoing experience as much as the films themselves. The chain enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy on talking and phone use during screenings, removing disruptive patrons when necessary.

It also offers in-seat food and drink service, themed screenings, filmmaker events and exclusive engagements, while rewarding frequent moviegoers with complimentary food and access to special screenings.

The company also says it screens more films than any other theater group in the world, programming everything from blockbuster releases to repertory titles that may not receive theatrical exhibition.

Alamo Exclusives expands on that approach by complementing the company’s existing Drafthouse Recommend program.

While Drafthouse Recommend highlights independently distributed films, Alamo Exclusives is specifically intended for films that have yet to secure any theatrical distribution. Release sizes and theatrical runs will be determined individually with participating filmmakers.

“It gives us another way to champion filmmaker-driven films that deserve to be discovered and connect them with the wider Alamo Drafthouse audience,” CEO Michael Kustermann said.

The initiative will launch with Tom Stern’s documentary Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt, which premiered at SXSW 2025 to a strong reception.

The documentary will receive an exclusive nationwide theatrical run across all 40 Alamo Drafthouse locations this summer, with tickets scheduled to go on sale beginning July 21 through drafthouse.com.

The film chronicles the history of the Butthole Surfers, the influential Austin-based punk band known for its unpredictable performances, rotating lineup and resistance to commercial conventions.

Despite its successful festival premiere, the documentary has not secured traditional theatrical distribution, making it an ideal fit for the new initiative.

The company said additional titles will be announced in the coming months. Filmmakers and sales agents interested in participating can submit projects through FilmFreeway.

Key Takeaway

Alamo Exclusives represents a new theatrical pathway for independent films that generate strong festival reception but fail to secure distribution. By partnering directly with filmmakers instead of acquiring traditional distribution rights, Alamo Drafthouse is creating another route for acclaimed festival films to reach theatrical audiences while reinforcing its longstanding commitment to independent cinema.
